My name is Fiona, I am 34 years old and live in Tunbridge Wells.  I am a mother to my three children aged 15, 7 and 5yrs.  I have recently trained to become a birth and postnatal doula, attending a course run by nurturing birth, and recognised by doula uk.  I am also an NNEB trained nursery nurse with 12 years working experience as a nanny.

I had never heard of a doula until recently and realised at once that it was a role I wanted to fulfill.  I have always wanted to train as a midwife but the state of the national health maternity services meant that I didn't feel that now was the right time to train.

Since completing my training as a doula in May 2007, I have been thoroughly exploring the facilities on offer to pregnant women in the area and have attended meetings with local reflexologists, massage therapists and antenatal yoga teachers to find out what services they offer to local women.

I am attending the local breastfeeding clinic on a weekly basis as a volunteer to further my knowledge of breastfeeding and to learn how to help new Mums feed without complication.

My birth experiences were very different from each other.  When my 7 year old was born, I felt very scared and very alone and things did not progress as planned resulting in a very traumatic labour and lots of intervention.  As a result of the damage to myself during birth, I delivered my youngest child by Ceasarean Section.

As a doula I hope to enable more women to have a more enjoyable, natural birthing experience with continuous emotional and physical support.
