A “Doula”comes from Ancient Greek times and was a female slave in the household. Among other things, it was the doula’s job to help the lady of the house during the birth of her children. These days, a Doula is an experienced woman who provides continuous physical and emotional support to a woman during childbirth as well as offering information and support both before and after the birth.
Research is showing some very positive benefits of a doula’s support and the use of a doula is fast increasing in maternity units around the world.
A doula does not take the place of the father during labour. She acts as a support to him as much as to the mother, encouraging him and showing him how best to support his partner.
The royal college of midwives, supports women’s choices in engaging the services of a doula due to an absence of social support traditionally provided by the family and believes that doulas may have a place as the woman’s companion in labour or as a supporter/helper in the postnatal period.
